Nigeria: What Is The Meaning Of Independence?

I must begin by confessing that the title of the present discourse is not my invention. It was what I thought was an innocent question from Isio, my eight-year-old daughter. The day was Monday, the eve of this year’s Indepen­dence Day anniversary and the time was morning just before seven o’clock. As has been the norm since 2008, I already had the key to the car in my hands waiting as my wife dressed Isio up for school so I could take her on school runs when she shot the question, “Mummy, what is the meaning of independence?”

Thinking it was an in­nocuous question from a child who want­ed to know what independence was or is all about, my wife began to explain to her. Isio retorted saying, “I know what inde­pendence is” and gave a brief overview of the subject matter before going on to do an expose on what provoked the question. She took on a rhetoric note saying, “I am asking the question because what is the meaning of independence when people are not happy. People are suffering. Peo­ple are hungry.

People are afraid because of insecurity. People are dying. There are no good roads. There is no regular elec­tricity. Fuel is very costly. That is why I asked, what is the meaning of indepen­dence?” Obviously she has been reading newspapers and watching the news like her older siblings. I usually compel them to read newspapers during weekends and make them watch the news. My wife and I exchanged uneasy glances and heaved when our daughter was done talking. We were both disturbed. I glanced at her again and again through the rear mirror imag­ining what was going on in her mind that morning as I drove her on the seven and a half kilometers journey to school.

My fear that morning, and even till now as I write, derives from my concern for Isio and her generation and also for Nige­ria our beloved country that is being laid waste as a result of bad leadership and complicity of the led. If a child that is less than ten years old and in primary school could be so intensely aware of the sordid and sorry condition of our country then things must have gone bad if not “worse and worst” for too long. My recall of my earliest critical engagement with Nigeria should be around 1986 when I had attained teenage.

That was the decade of the na­tion’s economic downturn when families had to starve or invent strategies that earned them survival. It was around that period that the Structural Adjustment Pro­gramme (SAP) was foisted on the nation to sap the citizens. Our childhood conscious­ness was assailed by hunger and we knew that something was giving way. The other indices that presently buffet us were then unknown or incipient and of unfelt conse­quences. Therefore, at that level of teenage awareness my critical engagement with Nigeria was not as intense, deeply con­scious and heavily indicting as that of my eight-year-old daughter in the present era.

The question, “what is the meaning of independence?” is not really Isio’s question alone, it is the question of the children of her generation and Nigeria owes them answers. Nigeria is the space in which that generation, just like mine, found itself so whatever contradictions that have made life unlivable and unbear­able for them must be tackled and resolved by Nigeria, and by Nigeria I mean those of us who sired the generation. But are we ready to address and redress the situa­tion? I doubt and strongly so. The “trouble with Nigeria”, apologies to Chinua Ache­be, has become infectious and almost in­curable. 

When Achebe did a diagnosis of the country’s ailing condition in 1983 in his insightful and refreshing monograph The Trouble with Nigeria some people na­ively thought that the views expressed in that treatise will light the nation’s path and lead it to some redemptive destination. For so all-encompassing and thorough was that analysis that readers thought an understanding of the thoughts shared in that pamphlet would constitute the silver bullet for the eradication of our woes. Un­fortunately, the problems multiplied and became inveterate phenomena.

Looking back one is wistful to the point of tears in remembrance of what inspired my generation. The stories our parents, especially our mothers and grandmothers, told us about independence and the hope it held and the untold joy its realization brought to them on that day in 1960 when the green-white-green flag displaced the Union Jack thrilled us. Our social stud­ies, government and history textbooks contained the inspiring stories of the in­dependence movement and its eventual attainment.

Our teachers, great teachers that they were, also zestfully taught us about the ideals and beauty of the activ­ities that culminated in independence. It was a frenzied moment that held the thrill arising from the infinite possibilities of freedom. Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, gave thought to the feeling generated by independence when he told his countrymen to seek first the political kingdom and every other thing would be added onto them.

Critical observers of the Nigerian and African condition should now reach the conclusion that the euphoria that greet­ed the anticipation and attainment of independence was misplaced. While the struggle for independence was ongoing there were Africans whose interests were largely selfish and they wasted no time in subverting the ideals of nationhood in new nations that they liberated from co­lonial bondage. 

If historians and social scientists didn’t see that cankerworm that gnawed at the body politick of the newly independent nations, African writers from Nigeria, to Ghana, Kenya, Somalia, among others, saw the pernicious trait and they aptly depicted it in their writings. Wole Soyinka’s pessimism in A Dance of the Forest, Chinua Achebe’s corrosive A Man of the People, Ayi Kwei Armah’s bleak The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born, Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s indicting A Grain of Wheat, all point to the African writer’s capacity to see beyond the frenzy and revelry that greeted independence. The crises that have held us down have always been there incip­ient and unnoticed for a long time except for the clairvoyant.

Nigeria didn’t and couldn’t celebrate her 64th independence anniversary be­cause the phenomenon no longer has meaning. It lost its significance many years ago. Rather than celebrate and me­morialize the day, Nigerians held their breadth and were tensed up in anticipation of the unknown. The nation was milita­rized as security forces poured onto the streets to preempt protests calling for an end to bad governance and clamouring for good governance.

The new wave of protest which began in August was intended to end bad governance and all its attendant ills. It was not about regime change, but a call for responsive and responsible leader­ship. The protest organizers, patriots them all, insist on continuing the protest on 1st October, the day of the nation’s freedom in 1960. Afraid of freedom and uncomfortable with good governance, those holding the levers of power rolled out military tanks to put unarmed civilians clamouring for good governance in check while bandits and terrorists are enjoying a field day in many parts of the country.

Independence has truly lost its meaning to the extent that those ruling Nigeria have become afraid of freedom from bad governance. Nigeria has been dubbed a failed state. It has been named among the most unsafe places to live in the world. It has been awarded the unflattering medal of the most corrupt country in the world. It has also been de­scribed as enmeshed in multi-dimensional poverty. These are real, scary and biting reality to the point that a child could ques­tion the essence of our independence. May be we should bring back the colonial mas­ters. After all, did government not give us the old national anthem when we asked to be governed right? Let the old colonial masters return in the same token!

A Nation Without Roads

The road constitutes a met­aphor of life’s journey for Africans. It is central to the configuration and under­standing of the metaphysical nexus between the abode of the dead and that of the living that we call life. The metaphoric and metaphysical essence of the road also mediates life’s journey and its uncertain twists and turns.

The road is benign as it connects people and places. The road is also a cruel phenomenon as it has thrown people and places into mourning. The road consumes hu­manity. It engenders loss. African literature in its depiction of the African predicament whether it is physical or existential has remained the most fertile site for the plural manifestations of the essence of the road.

Hard Times!

Hard Times, published in 1854, is the title of the tenth novel by Charles Dickens, the English novelist. Like most of Dickens’ novels, Hard Times is a searing indictment of a corrosive and morally atrophied so­ciety on the brink of disaster.

Set in Vic­torian England, which was touted as a prosperous epoch, the novel reframes the socio-economic turmoil that undermined the entire fabric of the English society of that time. The reality of what was config­ured as prosperity was acute deprivation and hunger for the common man as a re­sult of the dislocation occasioned by the Industrial Revolution.

Nigeria: The Poor Shall Not Die!

Delta State born gospel singer, Harold Ikuku, re­leased a popular album that was the rave of the moment in the tough and horri­ble years that the 1990s were. The song’s motif is “I shall not die”. Although a gospel song, it reso­nated with both Christians and non-Christians as a result of its affirmative message of survival in the face of brutal economic and psychological assault on the citizenry. 

It was this song that a man sang with so much gusto on hearing of the new pump price of petrol about three weeks ago, the second of such astronomical increase within two months of the present regime. When Presi­dent Bola Tinubu said, in his in­augural speech, that petroleum subsidy was gone, his handlers must have thought that it was a masterstroke in view of the fact that petrol subsidy had become an albatross for the Nigerian polity. 

Our Beloved Country Is Bleeding

 I do not know why countries or na­tions are thought of in feminine forms (she/her). Perhaps, it is a strategy to endear us to the place of our nativity and create a bond, the kind that exists between a mother and her child. Growing up, we sang songs that endeared Nigeria to us. Our young and impressionable minds glowed with no­ble ideas to which our sonorous voices gave clarion utterances. Men and wom­en who lived generations before this era also thought of their place of birth in endearing terms and they went to war in defence of their homeland.

Empires and kingdoms rose and fell in battles to defend the homeland. Even Nigeria’s national anthem and pledge have mem­orable and endearing words to configure our allegiance and love for “our beloved country”.

Nigeria: Mad And Dangerous Times

These are mad and dangerous times for Nigeria and I must concede that we never saw this coming. Not even the famed prophets envisioned the ca­lamities now buffeting us as a people. Nobody foresaw or warned us. Those among us who lay claims to clairvoyance are largely charlatans who think about causes and effects of actions and offer surmises which they call predictions. 

That is why they always turn around to tell us they were misquoted, quoted out of context or point at what they claimed they told us, but they never did. Charles Dickens’ Hard Times tells of a time of acute social insecurity and how the people were impoverished and pulver­ized. Like other narratives by Dickens, the nov­el mirrors the grim, dark and dreary side of life in a manner considered to be exaggerated.

Borrowing In The People’s Name To Steal!

Those who run and ruin Nigeria read like rogue characters in a picaresque. Nigeria has turned out to be a sordid adventure and those who dominate our landscape are the picaros. Roguish, arrogant and bra­vura-like, our rulers prance about and do things that normal people will not do.


Yes, those who presently rule Nigeria are not normal. Their mental constitution is made of something in the realm of the abnormal. Daily, we are confronted with a multiplicity of inanities orchestrated by government officials who are never fazed by their acts of recklessness and perfidy. They have turned Nigeria into a nation of anything goes since infractions now happen without sanctions.

Nigeria And The Politics Of Hunger

My generation's first experience of hunger and its attendant crises was in the mid-1980s. My genera­tion here refers to Nigerians born after the civil war and attained teenagehood from 1983 onwards. We have read in history books of how starvation was one of the major tools that was deployed to fight the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970.

Pictures abound of chil­dren, youths and older people who suffered from the affliction of hunger. Not even the efforts of humanitarian agencies that tried to alleviate the hunger in the refugee camps that littered the secessionist enclave of Biafra alleviated the crisis. Hunger engendered dis­eases which in turn yielded deaths. Many still believe that starvation more than bullets and bombs was what made Biafra to capitulate when it did.

An Oil Producing Country Without Fuel

The ongoing energy crisis manifesting as scarci­ty of petroleum products has for the umpteenth time portrayed Nigeria for what it truly is, a failed nation. Our failure is monumental and tragically so. A friend drew the analogy between Nigeria and a household that grows cassava, but lacks garri and the children from that home go plate in hand starving and begging whereas their parents’ farms hold thousands of cassava stems with robust tubers ensconced in the womb of the earth.

Nigeria prides herself as a leading oil pro­ducing nation, but like the man that lives by the riverside and washes his hands with spittle, Nigeria suffers peren­nial crisis in the petroleum sector. More than anything else, petroleum has been the most intransigent source of our problem as a nation. What has been described as the Dutch disease seems to find a lasting domain in Nige­ria.

Nigeria’s Gunboat Democracy

There is a sense in which some commentators are right when they argue that Nigeria is not a democracy. Their argument is based on the reality that the military has remained more than a recurring decimal in Nigeria’s political life. When the soldiers blew apart the pillars that held Nigeria’s democratic structure in January 1966, a pall fell on the nation and, the tragic detour which came with that experience is yet to yield the ideals of nationhood. Since then, with the exception of a few promising years, Nigeria has been ruled by hooded men who view statecraft as a cloak and dagger engagement.

The 1966 coup(s) birthed military rule for thirteen long years and when Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1979, the military adventurers didn’t give politics a wide berth. They hovered around and menaced the politicians. It was concluded then that Nigeria had two leading political parties; the then ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and the Nigerian Army (NA). And in just four years after 1979, the army serenaded Nigerians with an end of year’s gift of martial music on 31 December 1983. The soldiers were back in power. This time, they held sway for sixteen tortuous years. Buhari, Babangida, ‘Bacha, ‘Bdusalami, all took turns to bash Nigeria

Nigeria: President Buhari’s Greek Gifts

June 12th 1993 was a Saturday and it met me in Ughelli.
June is a month of unpredictable rain, but that day was bright; bright and fair.
We trooped out to vote for a new dawn. 
 I was then an impressionable undergraduate of the University of Benin possessed by ideals instilled by youth.

The buildup to that day was momentous and exciting. The military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida had embarked on the rigmarole it called transition to civil rule programme.
In the course of that tortuous experience, political parties were formed and disbanded.
Politicians were classified as new breed and old breed and they were banned and unbanned.

Nigeria: Gen Gowon’s Desecration Of History

Nigeria’s history has been so abused and distorted that there is hardly a consensus on what constitutes a genuine national narrative. Nigerian rulers have had to manipulate the history of their record in office to suit their whim. History ought to be sacred as the ultimate guide of a people. It is the unseen, but powerful propelling force from which a nation derives inspiration in the tortuous odyssey of national evolution. But when the history of a nation is subjected to deliberate distortions then such a nation is bound to be moored to the past with the people as captives. This has been Nigeria’s lot.

Nigeria hosted the 8th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa last week. It was at that forum that Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) did what amounted to a desecration of history. Hear him: “During our time, we did not know anything like corruption”.
He went a great length to buttress his assertion. Let us dream up an apotheosis for Gowon so that even in his lifetime he could become Saint Yakubu Gowon! What Gowon told his audience was far from the truth. The government he led from the hurly-burly of 1966 to the sedate ambience of 1975 was one of massive corruption.
