Benjamin Nwabueze: Teacher, Lawyer, Lawmaker And Scholar

The sad news of the passing on of Professor Benjamin Obi Nwabueze, first academic Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), “Professor of Professors”, as he was fondly referred to in Nigeria, is still reverberating in academic, legal fraternity and international circles. Many well-deserved tributes to the remarkable man and his memory are still circulating.

Please indulge me, l also thought I should share a personal tribute to him, expressing my gratitude and indebtedness to the great man. Ben Nwabueze was a remarkable man, an outstanding teacher, lawyer, law maker and scholar. He typified the excellence that Africa produces, for the most not fully acknowledged. He was an African treasure of the highest quality.

Why Nigerians Are Flocking To Peter Obi

The burning desire by Nigerians to see a turnaround in the country underscores the reason why Nigerians are flocking to Peter Obi and the Labour Party.

There is an urgent expectation for a new dawn to manifest in Nigeria without delay to give Nigerians a new lease of life. People are fed up with the status quo. Any political platform that could guarantee the desired rebirth becomes the centre of attraction.

As it were, Nigerians have suffered untold hardship, pain and anguish brought by selfish and greedy politicians. The political and economic system has been ruined. Long-suffering is a norm in Nigeria as people bear the burden of misrule. The virtue of patience has been overstretched beyond the limit and this is understandable.

Understandable in the sense that the country has been raped and bastardised and Nigerians denied the good things of life since independence. The desire for a productive country started on October 1, 1960. That desire did not materialise. Barely six years into independence the country was plunged into a fierce fratricidal civil war that claimed over a million lives and truncated the political and economic trajectory.

How To Kill A Country

Somalia was a beautiful country. It was also supposed to be a lucky country, one of the few in Africa whose boundaries harbour predominantly one ethnic group. Only few countries are in this category in Africa; like Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Many African countries are endangered by ethnic differences and even the veneer of democracy has not totally erased the old ethnic differences.

In Nigeria, we have fought a bloody Civil War caused mainly by ethnic differences. In Zimbabwe, ethnic rivalries had coloured the country’s history especially between the Shonas and the Ndebele. Rwanda was once also killed because of ethnic violence. But Somali, because it is populated by mainly the Somalis, is supposed to be free from ethnic tension.

But Somalia is also the workshop for the devil. For more than 30 years now, the devil has been at work in that country populated mainly by ethnic Somalis. Almost all the citizens are Muslims of the Sunni sect. Yet there is no country in Africa that has consistently worked against its interest like Somalia has done.
