Minister
of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, said in a British Broadcasting Corporation
(BBC) interview in London on Wednesday that the refusal
of the United States ’
government to classify the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist
organization was “very unfortunate”.

The US
had through the spokesman for their embassy in Nigeria , Russell Brooks, insisted that his
country supported the unity of Nigeria
and would volunteer its support to ensure the peaceful resolution of any crises
that threatened that unity. It however said that it did not believe that IPOB
qualified to be classified as terrorist organization under the laws of the United States
"The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria ’s
unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian
people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for
respectful debate in a democracy. Within the context of unity, we encourage all
Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of
grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organization
under US
law,' Mr. Brooks said.
But Mr. Mohammed disagrees.
The acts and utterances of IPOB were acts and utterances of
terrorists. For instance Nnamdi Kanu was caught on tape saying that they want
Biafra and not peacefully but by force and that if they don’t get Biafra,
Somalia will be a paradise with the kind of mayhem…This is also the same man
who opens a safe for arms and the same man who set up his own Biafra national
gathering, his own Biafra secret service and the same man who actually attacked
army formations.”
