1966 Coups, Biafra, Asaba Massacre, Gowon: Adebayo Williams On Chuks Iloegbunam

 By Tony Eluemunor

“I prefer to be accused of nastiness than to join in the national pastime of consigning events of a few years ago into prehistory”.

Chinua Achebe wrote that in the preface of his book of essays, Morning  Yet On Creation Day, to explain why he had to include essays on the Biafran war in that book instead of pretending that the war never took place. Here and now, I second that “motion”.

Tatalo Alamu, in his offering titled Ninety Bouquets For Jack Gowon published in the Nation newspaper of November 3, 2024, poured encomiums on Gen. Yakubu Gowon, “as an exemplary Nigerian patriot, a soldier-statesman and shining moral exemplar for many of his compatriots”.

Nigeria: Disaster Foretold; More Disaster Inevitable!

 By Tony Eluemunor

What Nigeria is going through now, be it religious, ethnic, social, political and economic, national insecurity, uncontrolled militancy and banditry, all our national ills, were disasters that were clearly foretold in a major publication.

*Tinubu

Next month will mark the 30th anniversary of Robert D. Kaplan’s “THE COMING ANARCHY – How scarcity, crime, overpopulation, tribalism, and disease are rapidly destroying the social fabric of our planet”.

Published in the Atlantic Monthly magazine in February 1994, it pretended to scrutinize the entire planet Earth, though it actually focused on West Africa – with Nigeria receiving a special attention which detailed out our problems and warned that things were about to get worse.

Oludele Idowu on Ben Nwabueze; Undiluted Nastiness!

 By Tony Eluemunor

Which infernal forces seized Mr. Oludele Idowu when he poured scorn on  late Prof Ben Nwabueze, a man well-respected whether in life or death, an author of over 30 books, the second Nigerian to have a PhD based on his publications and the second Nigerian academic to become a SAN based simply on his publications?

*Prof Nwabueze

It is a testimony to the nasty times in Nigeria that a man could disdain verifiable facts, and actually not feel ashamed that his name should be associated with crass untruths, and actually publish such nastiness to further bury the concept of unity in Nigeria.

Big For Nothing Nigeria

 By Tony Eluemunor

When Egypt and Ethiopia, but not Nigeria, were the two African countries invited to join the BRICS bloc last month, many Nigerians were not surprised. Our leaders did not even betray any anger that Nigeria was not among the six new countries invited to join the BRICS bloc.

*Tinubu

On 27 August 2023, a Nigerian newspaper, the Business Day published a story: “What is Nigeria missing by its non-membership of BRICS”? Its answer: “But why will Nigeria join the bloc, if one may ask? The bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa has since its formation as BRIC in 2009 and later BRICS in 2010, with the addition of South Africa, proven itself as formidable force against the overbearing and manipulative influence of the West”.

2023 Election: The Betrayal, The Tragedy, The Shame

 By Tony Eluemunor

First the betrayal: President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), without being prompted by anyone, repeatedly promised Nigerians a free and fair election in February 2023. Buhari promised that a transparent 2023 election would be his legacy project.

Yet, what happened? Local and international observers have derided both Nigeria and the elections. Both Buhari and the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu knew that giving Nigeria a flawless general election was doable. They knew that the money projected to meet the logistics that would make the poll transparent was duly budgeted for and the monies were made available to the electoral agency. The computing systems that would make it possible to upload results real time, and so deny election riggers the opportunity of cooking the figures at the so-called collating centres, were bought and designed. The right laws were in place.

Buhari’s Currency Change Fiasco, Failure Like No Other

 By Tony Eluemunor

Right now, Nigeria is sup-posed to have about the most experienced presi-dent on planet Earth. Or, how many serving Presidents have come onto their own when Gen. Muhammadu Buhari became Head of State on January 1st, 1984. That was 39 years ago! Yet, I’m reminded of Chinua Achebe’s saying in his first book of essays, Morning Yet On Creation Day; that experience does not automatically come from what happened “because much can happen to a stone without making that stone any wiser”.

So, he wrote that experience comes from the lessons we learn from whatever has happened. This means that we could learn the right or wrong lessons or no lessons at all. Yes, people repeat past mistakes simply because they fail to learn the right lessons from past events.

Buhari, APC: Stop This Hubris!

 By Tony Eluemunor

Why this brazen contempt for any opposing viewpoint. What has made Nigerians known to be the most vociferous critics on Mother Earth to lose all convictions?

*Buhari

Please dear reader, if you were not in Mars during a period of petrol scarcity when the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration held sway in Nigeria, you would have noticed the cascading of rambunctious criticism both Jonathan and the PDP faced – and rightly too. They had failed to make the refineries work maximally even as corruption trailed the petrol importation regime of that era. Apart from the trenchant criticism, all sorts of activists took to the streets to protest the belittling of Nigeria; an oil-producing country that was made to be importing petrol for local consumption just because she could not get her petrol refineries to work optimally.

Buharism: As The Naira Collapses, So Does Nigeria

 By Tony Eluemunor

I may not be an Economist but I don’t need an Economist to tell me that as the Naira tumbles in the foreign exchange (of currencies) market, thus Nigeria collapses. Or to put it in a proper perspective, thus the quality of the livelihood of Nigerians collapses, degrades, vanishes, disappears, is tarnished, is destroyed. I added that really needless second sentence because there could be some people out there that could claim that the country Nigeria is totally different from the citizens.

As strange as that may sound, some people actually think that the country Nigeria is different from her citizens, or that the health of her economy does not really impact on the lives of the citizenry. If not, the cost of necessities such as petrol, cement, electricity tariff, food, transportation, books, newsprint, even sachet water and bread, should not be rising every day and our leaders would be congratulating themselves for a job well done. Also, no government official has seen it fit to resign. Yes, they also tag themselves as “progressives”!

Thinking About Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Bid

 By Tony Eluemunor

You have to make one remarkable concession to Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu; he has “guts”.

And by guts, I mean something akin to resilience or determination. Yes, “grit” could be more like it. Grit actually refers to a hard coarse-grained siliceous sandstone, so it should do justice in describing a politician who is chummy with the “agberos” of Lagos state, yes, those crazy devils may care street goons of Oshodi bus stop and such other mean sites of the mean Lagos state. In fact, from what I have read about Tinubu, he may be the chummiest politician to those goons.

*Tinubu

Yet, the chumminess and the goonness of certain politicians and groups are not what this column set out to interrogate today. It just happens that even goonness should have a limit. So, too, personal interest.

That is why you could describe Tinubu with words such as willpower, resolve, purposefulness and the like and you would be 100 percent right, but if you bring in a word such as courage, you would become a liar.

Buhari’s Surpassing Failure: Nigeria’s Dashed Hopes

 By Tony Eluemunor

How many citizens remembered that 29th May was supposed to be a major anniversary? It was on May 29, 2015 – seven years ago – that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari became Nigeria’s President. Also, this Fourth Republic incepted on May 29, 1999, when Nigeria’s last military rule interval which began on January 1st, 1984 came to a frantic end. Frantic? Yes, the military by then, having thoroughgoingly disgraced itself, was forced back into the barracks as Nigerians agitated against military jackboot despotism and campaigned for democracy’s return.

*Buhari

And Nigeria had a party. Hope was renewed. Many of the state governors were young and the smiles on their faces hinted of the goodies to come.  The President in that promising era, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, was no neophyte.  He had not only been a military Head of State (1976-1979) he had been almost so superlative in office then, providing leadership to the African continent, standing up to the West in Africa’s fight against the accursed apartheid system in South Africa, that Nigerian university students tagged him “Uncle Sege”.

Obidients: The Protest Before The Revolt

 By Tony Eluemunor

Keeping faith with the sorry saying that: "All things bright and beautiful Nigeria kills them all,” we members of the wasted and wasting generations (age 40 and above) are busy demeaning the only hope that Nigeria could ever hope to get it right as a nation.

*Obi

Nigeria is right now on the verge of a right thing. Ever lucky, Nigeria is hosting a new political and nationalistic and developmental Mojo; that magical phenomenon of Nigerian youth rising up to seize control of the political space and lead from the front, instead of following behind their fathers and mothers. Mojo? It is a slang for a magic charm, talisman or spell or magical power or supernatural influence or luck.

Ordinarily, Nigeria has so failed and traumatized it’s youth that that segment of the citizenry should be totally alienated. But, here comes the young ones rising up to embrace and remake their fatherland. The political interest they have shown in the forth-coming 2023 election is out of this world, and could only have come from Nigeria, a country that breaks all the rules.

Lekki Massacre Begins To Look Like Asaba Massacre

 By Tony Eluemunor

Give it time, and the Lekki Toll-Gate Massacre will assume the nature of the Asaba Massacre. Then, it will have no official mention but will live on in the memories of those directly affected. And like the Asaba Massacre, it could assume a life of its own, and refuse to die whether or not it received the Federal Government’s confirmation.

Last October 10, I wrote in this column: “The Federal troops thundered into Asaba on the 5th October 1967. The Biafrans had melted away as the immediate commander, the late Col. Joe Achuzia (a son of Asaba), opted to retreat to Onitsha as a lorry load of cutlass was all he was given to defend Asaba with. He blew up the Niger Bridge on the 5th. Then, the indiscriminate killing started. It turned horrendous on the 6th and became fiendish on the 7th.

Ibrahim Babangida Years: Despotism In Full Sail

 By Tony Eluemunor

Please take your mind back to 1990 when Saddam Hussein’s Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait; the price of crude petroleum jumped because the ensuing war disrupted oil supplies. A totally unforeseen windfall, earning for Nigeria $12.1 billion. But did the windfall benefit Nigeria? A report put it thus: “Fiscal discipline broke down once more (because) established budgetary procedures were by-passed and the strategic planning processes that had been established under the Structural Adjustment Programme were largely ignored. Of major concern was the expenditure of the oil revenue without any budgetary authorization.”

*Babangida

This huge amount of money was fluffed away though Nigerians had by then been suffocating under SAP for four whole years! And wait for this; the 1991 budget suffered a deficit spending of N35.5 billion. It was as though that oil bonanza never happened.

I know that those who celebrated former Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) as Nigerians best ruler as he turned 80, never failed to mention the National Economic Reconstruction Fund (NERFUND) the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Peoples Bank of Nigeria (PBN) the Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DIFRRI) and others as programmes and bodies he established. But have they told us how such benefitted Nigeria?

Why Does Buhari Oppose Restructuring, Support Open Grazing?

 By Tony Eluemunor

How on Earth could anyone explain President Muhammadu Buhari’s recently advertised opposition to the massive calls that Nigeria be restructured? And does anyone know the exact reasons why he supports Rural Area Grazing Reserves (RUGA)?

*Buhari

What exactly did the President have in mind when on Saturday, June 19, 2021, he said in Kaduna (through a representative) that “those calling for restructuring are afraid of partisan politics”? He spoke that Saturday as a Special Guest of Honour during the Launch of Kudirat Abiola Sabon Gari, Zaria Peace Foundation which took place at Ahmadu Bello University Hotels, Zaria, Kaduna State. I hope he does not believe that once a man has been elected President he becomes a national teacher that can’t go wrong?

Buhari: Sad And Saddening Interviews

 By Tony Eluemunor

Ordinarily, any Nigerian should celebrate the very fact that President Mohammadu Buhari granted two nationally televised interviews in two days. This was a man who had been dubbed the taciturn one simply because he would clam up even when the cries of a need to address the nation was howling like the harmmattan wind.

*Buhari

Yet, what did the average Nigerian get? On very vexatious issues, the average Nigerian has remained as uninformed about the real issues in BUhari’s mind as though the man never spoke. And yet, he did speak volumes.

This time, the blame does not lie with the President at all. He never at any moment refused to answer any questions and it is to his credit that he never ruled some topics as no-go areas. So, what went wrong?

Buhari: A Feudal Lord Or Listening Servant Leader?

 By Tony Eluemunor

How many Nigerians really know their President, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari? Who knows his office hours? Does he put in punishing amount of hours into his job of being Nigeria’s President or does he work for just a few hours? How long do files stay on his desk? How much does he delegate duties to others? What does he do during the long flights of his frequent trips to other lands? What kind of books does he read? Does he, like former President Olusegun Obasanjo, be fully at work, poring through files even while ensconced in the Presidential jet, moving from one far-flung corner of the globe to another?

*Buhari

What is President Buhari’s favourite food? Who are his trusted lieutenants? How diverse are their backgrounds? Does he have friends from all parts of the country, or is he an introversive man of few friends … only those he grew up with? Would this not also make him appear a provincial man, instead of a metropolitan? Yet, would such not be a self-disservice to a man whom soldering has taken to all parts of Nigeria, and professional courses have taken to diverse portions of the globe?

Chuks Iloegbunam: Restless But Peaceful Soul

 By Tony Eluemunor

When I think about my big brother, Mazi Chuks Iloegbunam, what readily comes to mind is the timeless Abba song, “Move On”. Its opening lyrics truly capture the essential Chuks Iloegbunam.

*Iloegbunam

Here we go: “They say a restless body can hide a peaceful soul. A voyager and a settler, they both have a distant goal. If I explore the heavens, or if I search inside. Well, it really doesn’t matter as long as I can tell myself I’ve always tried”.

The Iloegbunam many know could be that one that never, never, repeat never, suffers fools gladly. As we all know, if you do not suffer fools gladly, you are not patient with people who you think are stupid.
