Nigeria: The Unreported Impact Of The Lingering ASUU Strike

Nothing can be more shocking than learning that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has embarked on not less than 16 industrial actions between 1999 and 2022.

For those who may not know, a major factor prompting our university lecturers to be laying down their tools intermittently is the failure of government to fulfill an agreement it once entered with the academic union.

Another factor is the failure of the lecturers to reinvent themselves and face current realities, and find fresh ways of resolving their incessant disputes with the government.

Each time the ASUU strike rears its ugly head, one is forced to conclude that both the government and our lecturers lack empathy for us the students. Better put: they don’t have our interest at heart.

The recurrence of ASUU strike has numerous negative impacts on us, something the government and ASUU don’t consider when they fail to come to an agreement. We lost a whole session to this same madness two years ago. The same thing is already happening now, with the ongoing strike.

The United States commends the Ugandan people for participating actively and peacefully in the February 18 elections. While the vote occurred without major unrest, we must acknowledge numerous reports of irregularities and official conduct that are deeply inconsistent with international standards and expectations for any democratic process.

Delays in the delivery of voting materials, reports of pre-checked ballots and vote buying, ongoing blockage of social media sites, and excessive use of force by the police, collectively undermine the integrity of the electoral process. The Ugandan people deserved better. We are also concerned by the continued house arrest of opposition presidential candidate Kizza Besigye. We call for his immediate release and the restoration of access to all social media sites.

We encourage those who wish to contest the election results to do so peacefully and in accordance with Uganda’s laws and judicial process, and urge the Ugandan government to respect the rights and freedoms of its people and refrain from interference in those processes.

eLearning Africa 2014 Call For Proposals Now Open

Many African countries are undergoing an economic boom, with ICTs seen as a major tool supporting growth. While Internet penetration rates remain low, innovative technologies are helping to ensure connectivity for more Africans than ever before.

The buoyancy in the African eLearning market is yet another sign that the potential of this diverse Continent is already being realised. There are, however, major challenges ahead. Inflated trade tariffs and restrictive border controls between many African countries, for example, are stifling intra-African trade and collaboration, frequently presenting an all-too-physical barrier to continued, sustainable growth.

Out of this environment of challenge and opportunity, eLearning Africa has announced a Call for Proposals, inviting participants from across Africa and the world to submit their ideas, innovations and research, under the main theme of “Opening Frontiers to the Future”.
