Remembering Thomas Sankara

 By Ben Nkem Oramalugo

October 15, 2021 marked 34 years since Thomas Sankara was assassinated in Ouagadougo via the inhuman conspiracies of the Western imperialists, Ivory Coast and his good friend Blaise Compaore on October 15, 1987. Nevertheless, even in death Sankara has joined the pantheon of immortals whole ideals and praxis dominated and influenced Africa and will therefore live forever in the hearts of the people. His life was story of revolutionary regeneration of Burkina Faso (with a population of 8.5 million in 1985 and now 19.7 million).

Before his emergence as the leader of Burkina Faso, his country was one of the poorest countries in Africa ravaged by the exploitation of the Western Powers in collaboration with corrupt internal collaborators. At the age of 33 in 1983 when he became President, he immediately unleashed profound changes in the social, economic and political trajectory of his country. In tacit alliance, with socialist inclined states like Cuba, North Korea, China, Russia and China etc, he awakened the ideological consciousness of Burkina Faso people.

Compaore: Paying For Sankara’s Murder At Last?

 By Afolabi Gambari

The man on the left of the photo below (Blaise Compaore) was 36 years old in 1987. Today, he is 70 years old. He was boyhood friend to the man on the right (Thomas Sankara). They lived together in the home of Thomas whose parents (Papa Joseph and Madame Marguerite) adopted Blaise as their own son and showered on him all the love and care that dutiful parents shower on their offspring.

Indeed, Papa Sankara took both Thomas and Blaise to the Army where he got them enlisted and wished for the brotherly friends a bright future together.

As fate would have it, Thomas' star shot higher in the Army and he became head of state of their country, Burkina Faso. The fate also made Blaise fall behind his friend in hierarchy, although they ran the government together – to the pride and joy of Papa Joseph and Madame Marguerite who saw the friends grow from boys to men.

The Allure Of The Humanities

Our history strongly suggests that we need to moderate strength and power with discretion and diplomacy, not only among our leaders but also among the generality of our people. It is not weakness to recognize the value of discretion. It is foolhardiness to choose death (or something close to it) in place of life.”
– Michael J. C. Echeruo.

I decided to open today’s discussion with the above quote from Professor Echeruo’s A Matter Of Identity, his November 1979 foundational lecture of the Ahajioku Lecture Series. The reason is that it encapsulates the theme of my presentation, which is that E’kesia n’obi, ekee na mkpuke.

But, first of all, permit me to deliver to protocol its due. I count myself privileged to stand before you today, even if to do a job outside my professional territory of operation. I am a journalist who, by virtue of political appointments, has operated within governmental circles in the last 15 years. I have never been a teacher, not even a nursery school teacher. Yet, I have been pressed into service here, to deliver a disquisition to those whose primary and professional responsibility is the impartation of knowledge. In my view, it is like taking coal to Ngwo, Nigeria’s Newcastle! It has its risks and thrills. Theoretically, I could be ordered at any point of this assignment to return to wherever I came from, my thoughts and pronouncements considered no better than garble to the educated ear. On the other hand, I could be tolerated, in which case my representation could form a pedestal for firing crusts in order to extricate diamond. That would be thrilling.

Mr. President, Under Your Watch Corruption Only Changed Its Tactics And Swagger!

By Ishaq Sani
Dear Mr. President,
Thank you for rewarding our die-hard loyalty with betrayal. Before the 2015 election, those who told us never to believe in you, and described you as nepotistic and tribalistic, and called you an unrepentant fundamentalist have been vindicated. Those who ascribed your 1984 war against indiscipline and corruption fight to Gen. Tunde Idiagbon did not lie.
*President Buhari
Shortly before the 2015, I likened you with my idol Thomas Sankara, and deified you like the Greek god Apollos, but like the popular cliché “the leopard cannot change the colour of its skin,” you proved our opponents right.
Under your watch the lives of animals appear to be more sacred than the lives of humans; killer herdsmen or better still, unknown gun men, as you would prefer them to be called, are the second most deadly terrorist group in Nigeria and not IPOB as your government tried to establish.
